INDIANAPOLIS – On Monday, State Senator Eddie Melton (D-Merrillville) released the following statement after Senate Democrats failed to pass four amendments to Senate Bill (SB) 276 concerning the expansion of prekindergarten education throughout the state. The amendments aimed to increase funding for prekindergarten and make early childhood education available to more children in Indiana.
“It is now evident that most of the members in the Senate support the expansion of prekindergarten, but differ on how we roll it out across the state.
“I think we’re pretty much kicking a can down the road on whether or not to expand prekindergarten to every child. As this bill currently stands, we have expanded the opportunity for every county to participate in the pilot program, but we have not included the appropriate amount of funding to meet the need and the interest.
“We need to come up with a comprehensive, long-term strategy on how we implement statewide early childhood education, how to fund it and how we make it sustainable for generations to come from every zip code across Indiana.”
