Tallian responds to updated, positive revenue forecast

INDIANAPOLIS – Today the Indiana Budget Committee met to receive an update pertaining to the projected revenues for the state’s biennial budget. The Revenue Technical Forecast Committee updated members of the legislature regarding the forecast they compiled in December 2016. State Senator Karen Tallian (D-Portage) is a member of the State Budget Committee and participated in today’s hearing and offered the following statements.

“Today’s revenue update by the forecast committee validates the significant and specialized work the committee performs,” said Tallian. “The heavy lifting in planning for the biennial budget starts with the technical committee. Today’s update lines up with the figures presented last December and the variables used by the committee seem to be formed on solid ground.”

The Revenue Technical Committee is a bipartisan committee tasked with projecting state funds in order for the legislature’s budget-writing committees to appropriately draft the state’s two-year budget. The revenue forecast also allows the executive branch to form a baseline of revenues so they can adequately manage spending once the budget is signed into law.

“With an uptick in the projected revenues for the next fiscal year, the state now has a financial cushion to help pad the budget.”

“Although there is a relatively small bump in projected revenues, I am not encouraging spending all the projected increase this biennium.” Tallian continued, “I would hope that the majority in both chambers see it prudent to use this money to invest in Hoosiers; at a minimum I would like to finally see an investment in a state-wide pre-kindergarten program, matching what Governor Holcomb asked for in January.”

“In addition to an investment in our state’s children, I would like to see the state’s infrastructure spending increase slightly as well, especially in the way House Bill 1002 currently distributes funds to our local units of government.”
