Senate Democratic Leader Tim Lanane (D-Anderson) has introduced several bills for the 2020 legislative session, focusing on prohibiting discrimination in Indiana’s civil rights statutes, creating an independent redistricting commission and establishing a study of low-carbon and green industries.
Prohibited discrimination in civil rights statutes
Senate Bill (SB) 137 would extend Indiana’s civil rights statutes to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, veteran status and ancestry.
“Right now, Hoosiers are able to be discriminated against based on who they love or who they are and that’s unacceptable,” Sen. Lanane said. “It is time we do the right thing and ensure protections for all Hoosiers.”
Redistricting commission
SB 138 would establish a non-partisan redistricting commission to create, hold hearings on, take public comment about and recommend plans to redraw General Assembly and congressional districts.
“Right now, politicians can manipulate the borders of their own districts to include people who are more likely to vote for them,” Sen. Lanane said. “That’s why it is imperative that we assign the task of redrawing district maps to a non-partisan, independent body. It is time Hoosiers choose their elected officials, not the other way around.”
SPEA study on low-carbon and green industries
SB 276 would require the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University to assess the potential for the development of low-carbon and green industries in Indiana. The development of these industries could lead to job creation, economic growth and wealth generation.
“It is important that we look at ways we can help boost Indiana’s economic growth through the use of environmentally friendly industries,” Sen. Lanane said. “A 2018 report ranked Indiana’s natural environment 48th in the nation. We have to do our part to ensure Hoosiers are breathing clean air and we are creating a sustainable future for all citizens.”
