INDIANAPOLIS— Assistant Senate Minority Leader Andrea Hunley (D-Indianapolis) expressed disappointment that Senate Bill (SB) 518, a bill that could cause destabilization throughout Indiana communities, passed out of the Senate.

SB 518 would divert property tax dollars away from traditional public-school districts who have more than 500 students who attend charter schools. Charter schools would then receive those property tax dollars but would see their state funding decrease as a result.

“My district is rich with options for parents when it comes to educating their children,” said Hunley. “This diversity in school type is a strength, and our goal in the legislature should be for all of these families to see strong education outcomes for their students, not to pick winners and losers so that the state can save money.”

Indiana Senate Democrats introduced 19 amendments to the bill during second reading focused on transportation for children, financial responsibility, local oversight, and more. All amendments were voted down by the super majority.

Hunley noted the unprecedented nature of this legislation and the lack of consideration for the impact on local communities.

“It is unprecedented to pass legislation without fully understanding the fiscal impact,” said Hunley. “Passing legislation that will destabilize entire school districts should not be normalized.”

Hunley emphasized that SB 518 takes a narrow look at a much bigger picture and will not benefit students or taxpayers in the long run.

“Concerned parents, teachers, students, and community members should continue to follow along and call their Representatives as this bill moves over to the House,” said Hunley. “Your voice matters and together we can work to ensure our communities continue to thrive.
