FORT WAYNE—The Indiana State Budget Committee recently completed a two-day visit to Fort Wayne to tour local economic development projects and review statewide budget reports. State Senator David Niezgodski (D-South Bend), the Senate Democratic Caucus voting member on the committee, participated in the visit and offered the following statement:
“It was encouraging to see firsthand the strides Fort Wayne has made in economic development,” said Niezgodski. “Projects like the Riverfront showcase how communities can turn natural assets into vibrant public spaces that bring people together for recreation, community events and tourism.”
Niezgodski highlighted the value of using Fort Wayne as one of many Hoosier cities as a model for communities starting similar projects across Indiana:
“After seeing the revitalization efforts up close, I hope other communities can look to Fort Wayne’s success as a blueprint for reimagining and reinvigorating their downtowns,” said Niezgodski. “It’s a reminder of what’s possible with thoughtful planning and investment.”
In addition to touring local sites, the committee reviewed reports from the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority, which focuses on economic growth in the northern part of the state and regional connectivity to Chicago.
“We had productive conversations about key projects like the South Shore Line improvements. Enhancements to this rail connection have made northern Indiana more accessible and inviting, not just for commuters, but for tourists who are discovering what our state has to offer,” said Niezgodski.
Niezgodski closed by emphasizing the broader significance of the trip:
“These visits give us important insight into how communities are investing in their future,” he explained. “It’s clear that parts of Indiana are flourishing through smart development and local collaboration. I’m hopeful that we can continue to support initiatives that strengthen our state’s economy and bring people together.”
