Today, justice prevailed. For one year we have collectively stood up in the form of art, in the form of protests, in the form of organizing, to resoundingly say that Black lives matter. Each day, people across Indianapolis, across our state and across the country stood up to make their voice heard and to demand change.

In this one instance, justice prevailed. But there remains significant work. Injustice facing Black Americans isn’t going to go away without significant work. Just as we were certain that George Floyd wouldn’t be the last person of color killed by a police officer, we are also certain that Adam Toledo won’t be the last.

Today’s verdict means a lot to the movement to protect Black lives, but there are still reforms we have to make if we want to see significant change. I look forward to working towards that change.
