INDIANAPOLIS—Senate Assistant Democratic Leader Eddie Melton (D-Gary) released the following statement in response to yesterday’s mass shooting in Greenwood which left four people dead:
“How much more will Hoosiers be asked to take? The mass shooting in Greenwood last night was just the most recent act of senseless violence in an ongoing series of senseless violence that common-sense gun safety measures could help prevent.
“I send my deepest condolences to the families who are grieving today. The scars left behind after experiencing gun violence do not fade and our Legislature must act to protect our residents from these preventable tragedies.
“With permitless carry now in effect in Indiana, the threat to our streets is higher than ever and our residents want to see action. I again call on Governor Holcomb and our supermajority Legislature to use this special session to consider gun safety measures that Hoosiers have demanded. My colleagues have stated that their goal during this session is to protect innocent lives. Let’s add gun safety legislation to our agenda of bills to consider so we can do that.”
