BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The Indiana State Budget Committee conducted a two-day tour on Aug. 22-23 across southern Indiana to evaluate budgetary priorities and address funding needs for critical infrastructure projects. The tour included a visit to WestGate Academy at the Crane Technology Park, where the committee heard from organizations working to enhance the state’s defense capabilities. State Senator David Niezgodski (D-South Bend), the Senate Democrat voting member, shared his reflections on this experience.
“One of the highlights of our tour was visiting Naval Support Activity Crane,” Niezgodski said. “This visit allowed committee members to witness firsthand the advanced technological operations that are crucial to our state’s defense infrastructure.”
Niezgodski said he was pleased to support budget requests made by Brig. Gen. Justin Mann to modernize and enhance military facilities, ensuring they remain on the cutting edge of national defense.
The committee also reviewed funding requests from the Indiana Finance Authority, including those for water infrastructure assistance. These funds are critical for providing low-interest loans and grants that support water and wastewater utility infrastructure projects, as well as much-needed residential housing infrastructure assistance initiatives, according to Niezgodski.
Along with fellow State Sen. Fady Qaddoura (D-Indianapolis), Niezgodski expressed ongoing concerns regarding the work of the Indiana Economic Development Commission (IEDC). He emphasized the importance of transparency in any request for additional funding to ensure Hoosier taxpayer dollars are used effectively and yield tangible benefits.
“The Budget Committee must maintain its role in providing oversight and ensuring that economic development efforts benefit all Hoosiers,” Niezgodski said. “While we want to see Indiana prosper and attract new business, it is our responsibility to ensure these efforts result in meaningful returns for our citizens. I am committed to ongoing discussions with the IEDC to foster trust, goodwill and economic success that every Hoosier can celebrate.”
Niezgodski also expressed his gratitude to Indiana University and the IU staff for hosting the State Budget Committee’s August hearing at the IU Health Center.
