INDIANAPOLIS—Martin University staff have been reported to be terminated after the university announced it could no longer afford to continue operations due to a lack of funding. The announcement, made last week, explained that the university would pause operations after decades of service to the Indianapolis community. State Sen. La Keisha Jackson (D-Indianapolis) released the following statement in response:
“It is deeply disappointing that the only predominantly Black university in the state is shutting its doors. This marks the end of an era. Martin University has long drawn strength from diversity, helping to uplift students, families and the broader Indianapolis community. Its impact will be felt for generations.
“For many students, Martin University was more than a campus, rather it was a lifeline to opportunity, stability and upward mobility. The loss of this institution leaves a significant void in our higher education landscape.
“We must take a hard look at how the state supports institutions that serve historically underserved communities. The students, faculty and staff deserve better, and we owe it to them to learn from this moment.”
