INDIANAPOLISSenate Bill (SB) 148, Indiana Crime Guns Taskforce, passed the House of Representatives 98-0. State Senator Rodney Pol Jr. (D-Chesterton), author of the bill, released the following statement:

“Public safety in our communities is of utmost importance,” said Pol. “The addition of LaPorte and Porter counties to the Indiana Crime Guns Taskforce provides more tools in the toolbox for solving crimes and bringing justice to victims and their families. This bill, rather than increasing penalties for crimes without empirical evidence of reducing recidivism or improving public safety, invests in data-driven resources and preventive measures proven to decrease crime.”

Pol expressed his gratitude to both Sen. Aaron Freeman (R-Indianapolis) and Rep. Wendy McNamara (R-Evansville) for hearing the bill in committee. He also thanked Sen. Mike Bohacek (R-Michiana Shores) for being a third author on the legislation, Sen. Kyle Walker (R-Lawrence), Sen. Ed Charbonneau (R-Valparaiso), Sen. Fady Qaddoura (D-Indianapolis), Sen. Lonnie Randolph (D-East Chicago), and Sen. Michael Crider (R-Greenfield) for being co-authors, and to Rep. Chris Jeter (R-Fishers), Rep. Randy Novak (D-Michigan City), Rep. Chuck Moseley (D-Chesterton), and Rep. Jim Pressel (R-Rolling Prairie) for sponsoring the bill.

“I appreciate the bipartisan support for this bill throughout the entire legislative process,” said Pol. “This bill passing shows that the importance of public safety is a statewide priority.”

SB 148 now moves to the Governor’s desk for his signature.
