INDIANAPOLIS—Senate Bill (SB) 232, which allows the City of Gary flexibility in disposing of the city’s real property, passed out of the House of Representatives with a final vote of 93-2.

State Senator Mark Spencer (D-Gary), who authored the bill, expressed gratitude for the bipartisan support of this legislation throughout the entire legislative process.

“I am so thankful to Sens. Dan Dernulc (R-Highland) and Ed Charbonneau (R-Valparaiso) for joining me as authors on this legislation, to Sen. Jim Buck (R-Kokomo) and Rep. Chris May (R-Bedford) for hearing this legislation in committee and to Reps. Julie Olthoff (R-Crown Point) and Earl Harris Jr. (D-East Chicago) for sponsoring the legislation in the House,” said Spencer. “I am also thankful to the local leadership of Gary for their collaboration throughout this process.”

Spencer said that the passage of SB 232 gives him even more optimism for the historic upward trajectory of the City of Gary.

“Being able to swiftly sell thousands of vacant properties will allow Gary to continue its transformation and bring more folks to our region,” said Spencer. “The success of this bill is a testament to the fact that Northwest Indiana is an economic engine of our state.”

The legislation now heads to the Governor’s desk for his signature.
