INDIANAPOLIS — Senator Andrea Hunley (D-Indianapolis) commented on the power of community and the need to pursue more legislation for affordable housing in Indiana after the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals' (NAHREP) Policy in Action: Empowering the Latino Voice event this morning.

"This was a powerful event where real estate, lending and building professionals are using their platforms to discover new ways they can serve as advocates for their communities," said Hunley.

The NAHREP's mission is to advance Hispanic homeownership and to help more people secure this key aspect of the American Dream.

Key Statistics Presented Regarding Latino Homeownership in Indiana:

  • Latino Homeownership Rates in Indiana: 59.6%
  • General Population Homeownership Rates in Indiana: 70.4%
  • In Indiana, Latinos were responsible for 21.5% of homeownership growth over the last 10 years
  • Latino Civilian Labor Force Participation Rate in Indiana: 71.5%

"Whether it is advocating for additional supports for first-time homebuyers, addressing a housing shortage or supporting our renters so that they can be better positioned for homeownership, there is opportunity for the General Assembly to help more folks get into homes," said Hunley.

Hunley emphasized the need for people to continue to reach out to elected officials as the state continues to navigate a housing affordability crisis.

"We see the statistics, we read the reports but hearing directly from constituents is what creates change," said Hunley. "It is important that people truly understand the weight their voice holds, and events that champion this idea are essential in accomplishing that.
