GARY, IND. — State Senator Mark Spencer (D-Gary) commended law enforcement, local leadership and the Gary Community after the release of the Mid-Year Public Safety Report that indicated significant reductions in homicides, non-fatal shootings and overdose cases.

“We do not see 55% fewer homicides in the span of a year by chance,” said Spencer. “This is the result of strategic initiatives from city leaders and proactive policing from our law enforcement, both of which are saving lives.”

The Public Safety Report also showed that the Gary Police Department is closing cases at rates outpacing the national average (88%), has responded to nearly 40,000 calls in the first half of 2025 and is continuing to prioritize recruitment and retention to help ensure that these trends continue.

“While I celebrate this report, it also serves as a call to action to each and every one of us,” said Spencer. “Public safety takes a village. We have shown we are up to the task, and I know we will continue to deliver for our home.”
