INDIANAPOLIS—State Senator David Niezgodski (D-South Bend) releases a statement following Senate Bill (SB) 248 not being voted on today in the Education and Career Services Committee:
“Following yesterday’s committee hearing on Senate Bill 248, it is clear that significantly greater thought is being given to the bill’s ultimate impact and outcomes. That progress is the direct result of meaningful collaboration at the legislative level, in conjunction with the testimony provided by South Bend School Administration, the School Board’s attorney and School Board President. Their engagement during the bill hearing helped ensure that the real-world implications for students, educators and school communities were fully considered.
“This type of cooperation, between legislators and local education leaders, is critical to crafting sound policy and improving legislation so it better serves Indiana’s schools and families.
“There is still over a month of session left. I will continue to collaborate with Senator Rogers, the author of the bill, and do everything possible to ultimately arrive at an answer to SB 248 that our entire South Bend Community will be able to join in agreement.”
