Day 2 of Budget Hearings: Public Universities Fiscal Requests I emphasized to all university presidents the need to:✔️Maintain affordable tuition for higher education ✔️Increase admissions for IN in-state residents ✔️Increase student retention in IN after graduation ✔️Build a pipeline between high schools & colleges to increase enrollment in vocational training, 2 & 4-year colleges ✔️Increase on-time completion ✔️Expand reach to underrepresented communities ✔️Protect students’ freedom of speech from radical politicians (attack by the LG-Elect on IU’s student newspaper Indiana Daily Student - idsnews). I will defend 1st Amendment rights for all! Higher ED shouldn’t be politicized, especially by radicals who claim that democracy doesn’t exist in the US. ... See MoreSee Less

Day 1 of State Fiscal Year 26-27 Budget Hearings: Main Concerns: ➡️ IN Secretary of State: requested ~$3 Million increase despite no elections in 2025 and a midterm in 2026.➡️ IN Treasurer's Office: requested $29.5 Million for Education and Career Scholarship Accounts and $2 Million to administer the program. We can save $2 Million by merging this program with DOE. ➡️ Commission on Higher Ed: ❌Over 60 years, IN Bachelor’s degree attainment rate is still amongst the lowest in the nation. ❌Out of every 100 high school freshmen, 13 don’t graduate, 41 don’t attend college, and 7 enroll in out-of-state universities. IN must align the strategies between DOE, CHE, DWD and IEDC to ensure all Hoosier workers can thrive and to address the brain drain problem. ✔️College tuition needs to be more affordable and we must invest in vocational training in advanced manufacturing and STEM fields to secure better futures for the 54% of IN high school students who will never attend college. ✔️Hoosiers deserve a data-driven and a strategic government that is responsive to the needs of more than half of its population who live in financial insecurity (paycheck to paycheck). ... Congratulations to Mr. Andrew Rice for receiving the 2024 @HFTforSchools Prize for Teaching Excellence! His dedication to his automotive students @JELCC @msdwt is truly inspiring. This recognition honors teachers' dedication to helping students reach their full potential.

I also appreciate the @IndianaACTE for awarding me the 2024 Citation Award in recognition of my efforts championing state funding for CTE programs across IN. I’m committed to fully funding public schools, educators, & CTE programs to help 1 million students fulfill their dreams.

Wishing a meaningful #YomKippur to all who observe. May this day of reflection, prayer and atonement bring peace, healing, and renewal. G’mar Chatima Tova—may you be sealed in the Book of Life.
