INDIANAPOLIS—The Senate and House have added a 13th check back to HB 1004. State Senator David Niezgodski (D-South Bend) released the following statement:
“I am pleased to announce that the 13th check has been reinstated in HB 1004 for our retired public employees and teachers. I have been and will continue to be a steadfast supporter of the 13th check and COLAs.
“Not only does this bill add a 13th check for this year, but it also creates a plan to have 13th checks and COLAs going forward. During the last budget session, the Indiana General Assembly neglected to appropriate funds for either a 13th check or a COLA, leaving retired public school teachers and public employees without either form of relief. Our commitment to this program demonstrates the state’s dedication and appreciation to Hoosiers who have worked for our state. Compensating our retirees who built this state is the least we can do to express our gratitude to them.
“I am happy to see the 13th Check restored and appreciate the overwhelming support for this bill.”
