INDIANAPOLIS—Today, the Senate passed House Bill 1235 with a vote of 33-15. State Senator Rodney Pol Jr. (D-Chesterton) released the following statement:

“To say that I am extremely disappointed in the legislature for passing this bill would be an understatement. The City of Gary should have the right to its day in court in a lawsuit that the Courts have held time and time again to be a valid claim. This is legislative overreach into the judicial branch in pending litigation.

“HB 1235 is improperly aimed at only one city in Indiana and limits the city’s right to defend itself. However, passing this bill sends the message to all major industries that if you do not like being held accountable, you can come to the Indiana legislature and never be held liable for unlawful actions. This is the opposite of “draining the swamp.” I wholeheartedly disagree with the passage of the reckless and irresponsible legislation and implore the governor to exercise his veto and protect the integrity of the three branches of government.”
