This past session, my bill SB 317 (Medical Debt Relief) fell just short, with a vote of 23–26. While it did not pass, I successfully secured a summer study committee to further examine the issue — an important step forward as I prepare to reintroduce the legislation in the 2026 session. This fight is far from over.Indiana’s health care system is broken. Too many Hoosiers are buried under medical debt while hospitals, collection agencies, and law firms litigating on behalf of collection agencies insist the system is “working” and blame patients as “fiscally irresponsible.” That is unacceptable.SB 317 would:✅ Prohibit liens on primary residences and wage garnishment for low- and fixed-income families✅ Require hospitals to clearly communicate financial aid eligibility and payment plan optionsMedical debt is not like credit cards, mortgages or student loans. No one chooses cancer, Alzheimer’s or chronic illness — and no family should face a lifetime of financial hardship simply because they need care.I will continue fighting for Hoosier families because protecting people from the crushing weight of medical debt isn’t just good policy — it’s the right thing to do.#INForAll ... In June, I sent a letter to the Governor fiercely opposing the proposed AES rate hikes, which would significantly increase utility bills for Hoosier families, and I requested additional IURC public hearings so that residents can express their opposition/concerns. Rising energy costs can place a heavy burden on hard-working families, especially those already struggling to make ends meet. Your voice is critical, so please attend these public meetings (details attached) to share how these rate increases would affect you, your family and your friends. #INForAll ... See MoreSee Less

💙 Hope. Unity. Action. 💙I’m deeply grateful to my colleague State Senator La Keisha Jackson, CAFE, Impd East District/IMPD News, fellow elected officials, civic and faith leaders, survivors, and every community member who came together for the Indy Far Eastside Peace Walk.We are united in standing against gun violence — especially the kind that robs our young people of their futures. Our message was clear and powerful: It takes a united community to lift our youth, show them they are loved, and invest in proven, evidence-based, life-changing solutions. When we walk together, we move toward peace. 🕊✨ ... This week, I was honored to join events highlighting the power of collaboration for the public good.

At the @APAPANational celebration, I had the privilege of offering welcoming remarks recognizing the incredible contributions of the Asian Pacific American community here in IN.

Finally, I joined the Indianapolis Ministerial Alliance of Greater Indianapolis for a dialogue with Governor Braun about critical policies including Medicaid, redistricting, budgets, and the need to focus on supporting vulnerable Hoosiers who need us most.

From community celebrations to international exchanges to statewide policy conversations, I will always advocate for policies, programs, and initiatives to move Indiana forward and ensure that our state is fair, just, inclusive, and welcoming to all. 🌎🤝 #INForAll
